Who is Nigel Slater?

Nigel Slater is one of our best-loved food writers, and has written his second volume of the Kitchen Diaries – a beautiful and inspiring companion volume to his best selling Kitchen Diaries. His articles feature in the Observer Food Monthly and the Guardian. See Nigel Slater’s recipes in the Guardian.

The Kitchen Diaries II “For years now I have kept notebooks, with scribbled shopping lists and early drafts of recipes in them. These notes form the basis of this second volume of The Kitchen Diaries. More than a diary, this is a collection of small kitchen celebrations, be it a casual, beer-fuelled supper of warm flatbreads with pieces of grilled lamb scattered with toasted pine kernels and blood-red pomegranate seeds or a quiet moment contemplating a bowl of soup and a loaf of bread.”

About : A Kitchen Chronicle. My latest book and the second volume of The Kitchen Diaries.

A collection of notes, essays, jottings and recipes compiled over the last three or four years. As you might expect from the title, this is a very personal book, written and photographed in my own kitchen. Not a television tie-in, but many of the recipes are those from the BBC1 series Simple Suppers and Simple Cooking.

Barefoot Contessa – How Easy is That – Ina Garten

Barefoot Contessa – How Easy is That – Ina Garten
Fabulous recipes and easy tips…

I must admit I have been watching Ina Garten and her cooking shows for some time now. Ina is always sending Jeffrey out to shop or cooking for him and the show projects a very reassuring cooking and family vibe. It is fun to watch and the recipes are straightforward and as the show is based in the US we see a different approach, however Ina is very much a European cook and her selection of ingredients can be bought each side of the Atlantic.

Back to the book: we are seeing some of the easiest every day recipes.

We have a selection of cocktails, starters, lunch, dinner, vegetables and desserts to whet our appetite. Ina is an outgoing and gregarious cook, with a gentle but inspiring touch that comes across on the TV shows and Ina designs recipes that are fresh and mostly just exude ingredients that look so health giving.

Recognising that we are all very busy these days and cooking needs to be a time limited affair, Ina sets the tone that many UK cooks and chefs has also followed, E.g. Jamie’s 15-Minute Meals, following hard after the previous text, Jamie’s 30-Minute Meals: A Revolutionary Approach to Cooking Good Food – Fast which shows an inescapable trend, except for those retired perhaps?

Before the recipes, Ina discusses the techniques and ingredients she will apply. Then we are treated to a selection of excellent recipes:

  • French toast bread pudding, looks fantastic!

Next cocktails, hold the sloe gin!

  • watermelon and mojitos- just awesome
  • maragritas with pink grapefruit…

A variety of sumptous soups and salads:

  • onion and fennel soup gratin
  • watermelon and arugula salad
  • fresh salmon tartare

What about:

  • lobster and shells
  • hummus
  • Greek lamb with yoghurt mint sauce?

Yes stunning food and a cook book not to be overlooked. Well done Ina!!

For the viewers in the US:

For the readers from Canada, welcome:

Enjoy being in the kitchen, but most of all enjoy family and food!!
