The final Clever Guts pull out with the Daily Mail by Dr Michael Mosley, on Friday looks at how we make decisions about what to eat.

A radical thought here, quite significant! Who or indeed what makes the decisions of what to eat, do we make that decision consciously or is it a subconscious process? Or is it the millions of neurons in our gut? Is it the microbes in our gut?

Dr Mosley suggests the microbes have more control and influence over us than we ever thought.

Makes one think doesn’t it! (No pun intended here).

Scary to imagine that it may not be our choice – but our microbiome?

So if we have not so good microbes – does that predispose us to select foods that are in fact bad for our health? If we have good microbes then we crave foods that are healthy?

So the conclusion is that by feeding out gut, healthy gut-friendly foods, we are improving our health, our physical and mental well-being – reducing weight and benefiting in many ways.

Revolutionary – worth reading the book and grasping these concepts if it helps us avoid serious illness for as long as we can.

By the way the book is a fun read and really is full of great research and clear explanations. Dr Mosley has the gift of being an excellent communicator, he is inquisitive about our health and how to improve it… a great read!

What is in the book?

Dietician Dr Michelle Harvie and oncologist Professor Tony Howell together run Manchester University’s breast cancer prevention centre. Over 12 years of research tracking 1,000 slimmers and then from a study of 34,000 women they discovered a link between being overweight and an increase in cancer risk.

Losing weight and keeping it off is thought to help reduce your risk of breast cancer by 40%. On the new plan, 65% lost weight and kept it off.

  • To follow the plan spend two days consuming protein and vegetables, but no carbohydrates.
  • Then for the next five days follow a Mediterranean style diet.

I can recommend this book – it does have substantial content, not a glossy production – just plain black and white – no pictures. What the diet is, why it is thought to work, how to follow it, menu planners for both sets of days and recipes (one third of the book).

Think of it this way, we can save for retirement and enjoy a pension, but what are we doing to try and ensure a healthy retirement? If we don’t have good health when we retire, there goes all the good work putting money aside for a pension. We may not enjoy the benefits when we reach that time! Based on the evidence from their research, Dr Harvie and Professor Howell concluded that this plan was – a’ clinically proven approach to dieting that can reduce breast cancer risk!’

The new concept of how to eat for 5 days and fast for 2 days, is catching on, however this concept is different. This is a plan that allows you to eat a Mediterranean menu for 5 days and then follow a no carbohydrate plan for 2 days. This approach when followed closely was found to help reduce weight and increase health – protecting against many cancers including breast cancer – no calorie counting and the plan is simplicity to follow.

The key to the health promoting diet is thought to be insulin control. When on the diet, tests show that insulin levels drop by 25%. The reduction in insulin levels is the key to cancer prevention. Many people have very high levels of insulin, leading to possible problems with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even dementia.

As high levels of insulin is thought to stimulate cancer cells particularly in the breast, keeping insulin under control could be the solution.

It is the carbohydrate reduction on two days that kicks in the lowering of insulin.

Other benefits include lower blood pressure, a problem for many. Lower weight and better cholesterol may also be possible effects of the plan.

This is a revolution in healthy eating, easy to follow – but best of all tackles one of our most feared cancers – I lost my mother and father to this disease and only wish they had known what to eat to lower the risk.
