Rachel Khoo My Little French Kitchen: Over 100 recipes from the shores of France

My Little French Kitchen: Over 100 recipes from the mountains, market squares and shores of France

A new cookbook by the very popular Rachel Khoo who after the success of the cookbook The Little Paris Kitchen presents The Little French Kitchen, bringing her modern twists to classic recipes from around France.

Rachel Khoo launched her first book The Little Paris Kitchen and BBC2 television series last year and became an overnight success. We all envied her Parisian lifestyle, fashion sense and the delicious recipes cooked up in her tiny kitchen.

It was then that the nation took her to their hearts and now a new cook book is available…10 October 2013.

Rachel is exploring France and in effect takes her ‘Little Paris Kitchen’ on tour in the second book, Rachel leaves the capital city to travel to the four corners of France in search of the very best recipes in the country. From the snow-topped mountains and Christmas markets of Alsace to the wine making region of the Bordeaux, the dreamy vistas of Provence and the well-stocked larders of Brittany and Normandy, Rachel seeks inspiration in some of the best-known foodie places as well as uncovering hidden insights.

Recipes include:

  • pork and clams with cider and butter beans,
  • spicy aubergine sticks with couscous,
  • baked figs with walnuts,
  • beer-glazed ham hock,
  • caramelized apple bake and spiced almond biscuits.

Now we can join Rachel Khoo on her tour de France in The Little French Kitchen:

Rachel is a graduate of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. It was her passion for patisserie that lured her to Paris, where she obtained a pastry diploma. She then put her skills to use at the delightful Paris culinary bookstore and tea salon, La Cocotte, where she catered for book launches and hosted cookery classes. Working as a freelancer, she now travels the world working on a variety of projects, from workshops to catering for huge blue-chip client events to smaller, intimate pop-up restaurants. Her first book was The Little Paris Kitchen, accompanying her hit BBC2 television series and writes a weekly recipe column for the Evening Standard.

Rachel Khoo The Little Paris Kitchen cook book

The Little Paris Kitchen by Rachel Khoo is a wonderfully written cookbook that screams out for us all to slow down in our culinary rush to all that is modern and remember a little about how we got to where we are today.

Years back British food and ingredients would not what be anything like what we have available now. French cooking and cuisine was way ahead of anything we had experienced, only those able to frequent the five star French restaurants or those visiting France could enjoy such high standards. Times have changed and cuisine in the UK is very advanced – from the small to the large restaurants and various food joints, also this trend is reflected in cooking at home.

With TV cooking shows and cook books all advancing the level of our home cooking in Italian food, Curries and baking – what happened to French food?

Rachel provides an answer and calls us to consider 120 French recipes that are real French food and available to us all, not only in the specialist French restaurants of in France itself.

The Little Paris Kitchen cook book has a number of sections:

  • Everyday cooking
  • Snack time
  • Summer Picnics
  • Dinner with friends and family
  • Sweet treats
  • French basics
  • Cook’s notes

Rachel walks us through how she discovered the recipes and introduces the butcher, the baker and wine guide.

For each recipe Rachel discusses the background to the dish, lists the ingredients, gives a clear step by step guide to how to prepare the dish and includes tips for using the ingredients or varying the contents of the dish.

Some of the dishes in the book are:

  • Fig and chicken liver salad
  • Warm potato and apple salad with black-pudding crumbs
  • Pistou soup
  • Smokey fish bake
  • Steak tatare
  • Spring lamb stew
  • Pancakes with a caramel sauce
  • Citrus fruit cake
  • Bacon and egg tart
  • Olive bread
  • Rabbit liver pate
  • Beef bourguignon
  • Coq au vin
