This is an excellent piece of work! It is really alot of labour and effort to produce such a detailed and very comprehensive volume on how to eat Simply but heathily.

If you want to be healthy, live an active and long life – buy this book – it is as SIMPLE as that!

This is not an occasion to say pass on what could be life-changing – have a look at the book (in Amazon) and the reviews for a great set of comments and explanation of the scope of the book. The book is very detailed (lots of ideas) and does require application to prepare all the different preserves, frozen treats, use of herbs, grains, smoothies, soups, shortcrust pastries, pies, salad, tacos, pot stews, miso, slaw, noodles, cakes, omelletes, dosas, toasties.

How to buy in bulk, save money, prepare in advance…. all good stuff!

But the bottom-line is the food is very, very healthy and like everything in life, you don’t get something ofr nothing: in other words – to be healthy we need to apply effort, to the food we eat, the exercise we take, the sleep we need.

Easier said than done.

The new advice on how to reduce sugar in your diet, lower your weight and improve health.

The sugar detox – in the Saturday edition of the Daily Mail the 18 January 2014, by Dr Brooke Alpert:

The theory is that sugar is much more harmful than we think, perhaps there is too much sugar in our diets. It is in fruit, many drinks and added to the foods we eat. Each day as we eat the amount of sugar adds up and it is the overall total that is the problem.

The new series in the Daily Mail all week summarises the book by Dr Alpert and outlines the dangers of too much sugar and the action we can take. It is in fact a detox – as we crave sugary foods and need to re educate our bodies to do without or do with a lot less.

There are recipes to help you detox, with a wonderful detox rice pudding.

There is a book available called The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great and Look Years Younger by Dr Brooke Alpert and Patricia Farris.

Starchy foods also present a problem, so a full inventory or check or what we buy and eat is necessary.

Combined with a 5:2 diet, we could be onto the secret of much better health and a longer life.

So what is the reason for giving up sugar?

With what started out as an experiment that showed health benefits for the author Sarah Wilson, she decided to adopt a sugar free life style.

The sugar she is referring to is in fruit, sweets, chocolate and honey as well as what we find in our food and drink. It is essentially the sugar fructose in particular.

Add up all the sugar we each consume in a day and wow!

See if you can add up the sugar you consume daily in terms of teaspoons, it will surprise you! For Sarah it was 25 plus – not including the so called hidden sugar in things like tomato sauce and foods.

The way to quit can be sudden – stop nearly all sugar – or the consumption of sugar can be slowly reduced. Expect some effects though, withdrawal can be severe.

I know this from personal experience! Try it and see!

You will see weight reduction and perhaps experience more energy.

Dietician Dr Michelle Harvie and oncologist Professor Tony Howell together run Manchester University’s breast cancer prevention centre. Over 12 years of research tracking 1,000 slimmers and then from a study of 34,000 women they discovered a link between being overweight and an increase in cancer risk.

Losing weight and keeping it off is thought to help reduce your risk of breast cancer by 40%. On the new plan, 65% lost weight and kept it off.

I can recommend this book – it does have substantial content, not a glossy production – just plain black and white – no pictures. What the diet is, why it is thought to work, how to follow it, menu planners for both sets of days and recipes (one third of the book).

Based on the evidence from their research, Dr Harvie and Professor Howell concluded that this plan was – a’ clinically proven approach to dieting that can reduce breast cancer risk!’

The new concept of how to eat for 5 days and fast for 2 days, is catching on, however this concept is different. This is a plan that allows you to eat a Mediterranean menu for 5 days and then follow a no carbohydrate plan for 2 days. This approach when followed closely was found to help reduce weight and increase health – protecting against many cancers including breast cancer – no calorie counting and the plan is simplicity to follow.

The key to the health promoting diet is thought to be insulin control. When on the diet, tests show that insulin levels drop by 25%. The reduction in insulin levels is the key to cancer prevention. Many people have very high levels of insulin, leading to possible problems with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even dementia.

As high levels of insulin is thought to stimulate cancer cells particularly in the breast, keeping insulin under control could be the solution.

It is the carbohydrate reduction on two days that kicks in the lowering of insulin.

Other benefits include lower blood pressure, a problem for many. Lower weight and better cholesterol may also be possible effects of the plan.

This is a revolution in healthy eating, easy to follow – but best of all tackles one of our most feared cancers – I lost my mother and father to this disease and only wish they had known what to eat to lower the risk.
