This is an honest and thought provoking programme – be prepare for alot of honesty.. you might say humble pie! Seriously, though this is very serious and as we all care for our friends, family but what about ourselves. When young you don’t notice the changes building up because of over eating, but hit 45 and then see high blood pressure and other problems. Life is shortening before us and we delay… Si and Dave realise that food while being their job, it is pleasurable and an adventure. But are they fat?
Read on or watch The Hairy Dieters – clips only for yourself…on BBC iPlayer…enjoy….
The guys with support of the family will try to loose weight and circumference around their waist. Measuring themselves is a laugh, but they are well over the recommended 37 inches for men. A bet of £500 to be able to fit into his favourite jeans, means Dave will have to loose weight big time.
Off to the market office where Si and Dave get weighed and the results is 19st 5 lbs and 17st 11lbs. Wow!!
How did it all happen, was it curry and beer? They both were slim when younger.
In those days money was scarce… so is it due to the fact we are all so well off today and most don’t go hungry – in fact we eat too much? Are we greedy…lazy…I am reminded of the saying “No free lunch”
Les and Muriel family of Dave’s have known him all their lifeained their slim figures and they don’t eat fried food, but grill thier food. Take out more than you put in is the advice from Les.
The boys realise they go back for second helpings and thus put on the weight…eating TOO MUCH!
So off to the University and Hospital of Newcastle and research int fat and diabeties. The effects of blubber on our bodies, i.e. body fat. Visceral fat, fat on the tummy. So Si and Dave have their body fat measured. Dave 38.1% fat…and Si 42% respectively…woops…
The professor at the university provides advice and wants the Hairy Bikers to lose 2 stone in about 3 months.
A return to the old school brings back memeories of some bad times, that perhaps led to the eating habit.
Britain needs to loose weight yet still enjoy cooking and our food.
Off to the dietician and a measure of how mush Dave and Si are actually eating. Opps, the daily average calorie intake for men is 2500, the guys are eating 3,500…1,000 calories for breakfast alone, 2,500 for dinner. Two bottles of wine…..
Well this is very revealing and the guys are stunned.
A visit to Jeff and Jane sees advice from Jeff on how to lower the fat used in cooking.
OK The answer is to join a ladies keep fit club… lots of laughs here, but they guys can’t cope.
The answer is to form a club of their own, a mutual support group to help each other. These friends of Si and Dave are overweight but enjoy their food, so the plan is hatched to find new recipes and try them out on the support group.
First of all is a lasagne with leeks instead of pasta for the layers. Lower fat – less cheese and stronger flavours.
They try it out as a surprise on the support group and chop the calories from 700 to 350.
Next week the search for recipes and the Hairy Bikers become the Hairy Cyclists. Very appropriate today when Sir Chris Hoy and team win gold, well done!! Bradley Wiggins – what can we say, thanks guys.
