The Clever Guts Diet Daily Mail Dr Michael Mosley Pull out Friday (@drmichaelmosley)

The final Clever Guts pull out with the Daily Mail by Dr Michael Mosley, on Friday looks at how we make decisions about what to eat.

A radical thought here, quite significant! Who or indeed what makes the decisions of what to eat, do we make that decision consciously or is it a subconscious process? Or is it the millions of neurons in our gut? Is it the microbes in our gut?

Dr Mosley suggests the microbes have more control and influence over us than we ever thought.

Makes one think doesn’t it! (No pun intended here).

Scary to imagine that it may not be our choice – but our microbiome?

Black Friday

So if we have not so good microbes – does that predispose us to select foods that are in fact bad for our health? If we have good microbes then we crave foods that are healthy?

So the conclusion is that by feeding out gut, healthy gut-friendly foods, we are improving our health, our physical and mental well-being – reducing weight and benefiting in many ways.

Revolutionary – worth reading the book and grasping these concepts if it helps us avoid serious illness for as long as we can.

By the way the book is a fun read and really is full of great research and clear explanations. Dr Mosley has the gift of being an excellent communicator, he is inquisitive about our health and how to improve it… a great read!

Recipes today:

  • Lazy lemon and lime baked chicken
  • Seafood risotto
  • Turkey Bolognese
  • Crab linguine
  • Cheat’s cassoulet
  • Tuna and vegetable stir-fry
  • Anti inflammatory tumeric dressing
  • Cashew dressing
  • Oil and lemon dressing
  • Lemony vinaigrette
  • Hummus dressing

The great thing is the book is now available to buy!!

A large amount of very useful advice, guides and recipes can be found in the very well-written and amusing book – see the links to read more and consider buying the book as a reference volume to keep handy.

Dr Mosley The Healthy Gut Diet @drmichaelmosley Daily Mail Thursday

Out today – 18 May 2017: Dr. Michael Mosley The Clever Guts Diet and has a series of articles each day in the Daily Mail with free pull-out.

Dr Michael Mosley is famous for the Fast Diet and the 8-week Blood Sugar books.

He is fascinated with how our bodies work, disease, longevity and how to promote long-term and lasting health.

It is a laugh out loud read… although all the advice in the book will do us good , the laughter I had reading is was a therapy in itself!

In Thursday’s Daily Mail, the topic is how to repair a bothersome tummy and the recipes included today are:

  • Seaweed and Prawn courgetti
  • Avocado with smoked salmon
  • Tanya’s healing smoothie
  • Crunchy carrot and beetroot salad
  • Kippers with spinach and tomatoes
  • Happy gut chicken soup
  • Hearty beef and orange stew
  • Moroccan beetroot chicken
  • Classic squid Provencale
  • Mackerel or cod in salsa verde
  • Tummy-soothing bone broth

If you have IBS or ‘leaky gut syndrome’ – any stomach or bowel sensitivities – then there is good news, depending on our history, the book can help with advice on how to remove foods from the diet and slowly reintroducing foods to locate those that may be causing the illness. Check out the book for the guidance through this process.

The great thing is the book is now available to buy!!

A large amount of very useful advice, guides and recipes can be found in the very well-written and amusing book – see the links to read more and consider buying the book as a reference volume to keep handy.

The Healthy Gut Diet Dr Michael Mosley @drmichaelmosley Daily Mail Wednesday

From Dr. Michael Mosley, author of the clever guts diet, due to be published tomorrow 18 May 2017.

In the article in today’s Daily Mail, Wednesday’s pull-out discusses preserved foods, such as Kefir milk, certain cheeses, yoghurt, sauerkraut and kimchis. These foods are natures probiotics for the human body.

These foods assist and aid our internal microbes, those that reside in the gut and the ones we wish to nuture, the good microbes, within our Microbiome.

Fermentation produces microbes that are beneficial for us, they are a diverse set and that helps us as well.

The recipes included today are:

  • Kefir ginger ice cream
  • Kimchi pickle
  • Mushroom and kimchi omelette
  • Chicken tagine and preserved lemon
  • Preserved lemon
  • Apple cider vinaigrette
  • Creamy kefir dressing
  • Lemon chia muffins
  • Exotic tangy carrot cake
  • Red rice pudding
  • Coffee and walnut cake

How to make your own yoghurt.

Tomorrow how to help IBS.

Zanna Van Dijk STRONG 80 Exercises and 40 Recipes Fit Healthy Balanced Body

For a balanced approach to Health and Exercise, to become STRONG and lose weight and belly fat – another interesting book by Zanna Van Dijk called STRONG: Over 80 Exercises and 40 Recipes For Achieving A Fit, Healthy and Balanced Body was published just towards the end of the last year (2016).

My new theme for @Cook_BookReview FoodBlog is to research the most current books and ideas that offer the best potential for developing our health, body and mind.

So a really good candidate is STRONG: Over 80 Exercises and 40 Recipes For Achieving A Fit, Healthy and Balanced Body – click the link to read more and see offers to buy on Amazon from £5.99.

It seems current trends lead to the conclusion that we need exercise, movement and healthy foods to maximise our potential.

Zanna Van Dijk has come up with the concept of making us strong, by exercise and eating with balance as the core concept.

Book Content:

There are three sections in Zanna’s book:

MOVE, NOURISH and THRIVE

MOVE:

Considers how best to move, through the most efficient forms of exercise.

Resistance, HIT and preparation, recovery.

A comprehensive list of 80 exercise, with sets and reps to target each of the key body areas, with beginner and advanced sections.

NOURISH:

A selection of 40 recipes for the main meals, with sensible, healthy balanced ingredients.

What food is, the need for balance in meals and a number of tips and tricks to enable healthier choices.

THRIVE:

Reflection and self-evaluation.

A very good guide to health, exercise and food to improve your body.

Though as with all books of this type, ask your Doctor for advice before starting any new regime – but with numerous beginners sections – the book is a gentle start to exercise that can transform our physical and mental health.

Joe Wicks – Lean Shape Shift Sustain books for a longer healthier life

The Body Coach, Joe wicks. Can we apply the Lean Shape Shift Sustain series of guides by Joe Wicks for a longer healthier life?

After a period of reflection, I have been working toward a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and health as the basis for enjoying the choice of food we eat.

The basis for a healthy lifestyle is to achieve optimum health, a happy and productive life for when we are young and into our later years.

When we are young we don’t worry (or know much about) the effects of ageing. Pains,  aches and gradual wear – that can cause serious disease – is not something younger people normally have to concern themselves about.

So as I get older the need to avoid the usual ‘wear and tear’ of daily life, knowing how to help to repair my body, keep well and have an enjoyable life is something worth making changes to achieve.

Nothing comes easily in this regard and we need to research, plan and act on a lifestyle that will help us achieve these goals. However it is worth it.

Where to start?

One very popular and trend setting ‘guru’ is Joe Wicks. He suggests a combination of meals and exercises to help you attain a healthy body. For really good videos on You Tube see The Body Coach.

Previous Joe Wicks blog

Before setting out on a plan such as Joe Wicks provides, please ensure that you are able to cope with the exercises and able to make the food choice changes required.

However without seeing food from a different perspective – we cannot and will not make the changes necessary for good health. Without realising it, what we eat is deeply ingrained in each of us. We tend to eat what we like – as opposed to what is good for us.

Small changes in the choice and combination of foods combined with the correct exercise can provide significant health benefits.

I will continue a series on health, food and exercise over the next few blogs.

Best selling cookbooks now

After reading – I recommend this new book from Jamie Oliver – Everyday Super Food.

Why?

Because of the very thorough work by Jamie and what this book can do for us all. We follow the recipes – Jamie has used his skills and knowledge to design super food recipes that stills tastes fabulous but packs in all that goodness that our bodies need.

Notice the clever play on words, Superfood meaning those foods that have super-charged nutrition and Super Food relating to the tasty and delicious conconctions Jamie has developed…………..

While reading all the new ‘stuff’ from our stars, celebrities and chefs I know there is justification for watching what we eat.

Cut back sugar, select the correct fat, watch for gluten free foods, sort out your gut get your microbiome under control. There are many of us who need to watch our diet.

A major concern is of course diabetes and we don’t seem to know how to avoid this major health concern.

All these new ideas are based on studies that are trying to contribute to the furthering of our knowledge about what we are – what we eat and how what we eat affects us and our bodies.

Good food, that is nutritious – do we have the time to be aware of all these factors?

So what is in the book? I have my copy now – note publication is on 27 August 2015.

The book is, as usual, beautifully produced. Great pictures.

There are sections on Breakfast, Lunch,  Dinner,  Snacks and Drinks.

Jamie has a section explaining his study for a nutrition diploma. He has consulted with all the experts and studied current knowledge about health, nutrition and wellbeing.

Recipes include dairy-free, gluten free and vegan.

See list of sample recipes below.

His guidance is distilled down into the changes we can make, some small and the new habits we could take on board.

Jamie discusses the food groups, what they are and the portions that we should eat. Calories, fat and sugar and their daily limits are given. The recipes in the book are all structured to show the calories,  fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, sugar, fibre and cooking time.

Each foodgroup is then discussed in detail and the quality and quantity of each that we need. For example carbs, fats – what is good – what is bad.

How do so many of the Greeks in Ikaria live to 90 with great healthy lives?

Simply – by every day – eating wonderful and natural food.

Milk and it’s benefits – healthy alternatives!

The liquid we all need and the effects of alcohol.

Jamie gives a guide to shopping and the way to make good choices.

Another very important factor is sleep! I would suggest we ignore a good night’s sleep at our peril. Try a week of seven and a half hours sleep and see the benefits.

There is an app that can help if we are serious about our bodies our lives and feeling well.

Recipes:

  • Baked eggs in popped beans
  • Granola dust
  • Poached egg smashed avocado
  • Smoothie Pancakes
  • Mexican pan-cooked breakfast

Jamie’s (see a link to the new book) Everyday Super Food makes eating well exciting, delicious, easy and fun.

Find Jamie’s new book in your country………….

Again Jamie is aware of our busy lives and lack of free time, so no matter how busy you are, this new book is designed to provide us with healthy eating solutions the Jamie. He has designed a way that is both straightforward and achievable, making it super easy to choose and make exactly the kind of meals that suit you.

You know, Jamie’s heart is certainly in the right place, his concern for our potential to become overweight and trend to ill health is not misplaced. He does make alot of money – yes- but Jamie is in the position of being able to help influence people and he is trying hard to get the healthy message across. An honest approach that I think gives Jamie the grounds for some attention and respect.

Amazon Book Review:

“The book is divided into breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and every tasty meal is nutritionally balanced so that any combination over the day will bring you in under your recommended daily allowance of calories, allowing you to enjoy snacks and drinks on the side. You can eat Smoothie Pancakes with Berries, Banana, Yoghurt and Nuts for breakfast, Tasty Fish Tacos with Game-Changing Kiwi, Lime and Chilli Salsa for lunch and Griddled Steak and Peppers with Herby-Jewelled Tabbouleh Rice for dinner, and still be healthy! Whether you dip in and out of it, eat from the book Monday to Friday or use it faithfully every day for a month, it’s totally up to you.

In Everyday Super Food, Jamie’s done all the hard work for you – all you need to do is choose a delicious recipe, cook it up and, most importantly, enjoy it.

Every meal in this book is a good choice and will bring you a step closer to a healthier, happier you.”

I suppose this is a plea for us to be careful about what we eat. Does it not make sense that the food that we eat – its quality, its component constituents and their efficiacy – our sleep and generally how we take care of our selves will affect our bodies gradually each day? All adding up to wear and tear over the weeks and years.

If we maximise the care and attention we give to our food and to our bodies, sleep and relaxation, then should we expect to live longer and perhaps have a better quality of life?

Or can we really eat anything and not be affected?
